Sickness benefit

  • Remember that your employer has to pay your social security contributions

  • If your employer doesn't pay your contributions, change jobs as soon as possible

  • When you receive the benefit, know your rights and obligations

In the Netherlands, as in Poland, you can take sick leave. It works a bit differently in the Netherlands. You don’t need an exemption or a doctor's certificate. Nevertheless, your employer has a right to ask you whether you are able to come to work for a shorter time or to do the work partly at home. Be aware that this is your decision.

You must report sick no later than on the second day of sickness. To whom you must report sick will depend on your situation. Check to whom you must report your sick here

UWV will determine whether you qualify for a sickness benefit. To do so, UWV investigates your sick report and your situation.

IMPORTANT!
The employer has the right to monitor the employee during the period of illness – they may come to your home to make sure you're really ill. That's why you should always give your current address and phone number. You can be also asked by the business doctor to visit him or her.

Remember!
During employment in so-called phase A, illness could be a cause for termination of the contract! However, you still have the right to claim sickness benefit from the UWV. If you are a commissioned employee (sent to work in the Netherlands by a Polish company), be certain about which country your contributions are paid in!
